Kindergarten Math Review:
We are beginning the year with some review of kindergarten math. Our intention is to help students learn the routines and expectations of first grade math while studying material that is familiar. In addition, we can help students who need help "catch up". Enjoy the activities below to help your student along!
Patterning:
- Make patterns using your snacks. "Goldfish, pretzel, goldfish, pretzel," is one example of a snack pattern. Try to make more complicated patterns, as well.
- Make patterns using your bodies. "Clap, snap, stomp, clap, snap, stomp," is one fun example.
- Look for patterns in the books you are reading. Is there a zebra in the picture? Does the book have a question and answer pattern? Is there something in the illustration that can be pointed out?
- Look for patterns in the clothing your child puts on. A pair of striped socks or a striped shirt are great examples.
Shapes:
- Talk about the shapes of the things in your house.
- Fold napkins at the dinner table into different shapes.
- Use play-doh to roll out shapes.
- Make sugar cookies in different shapes.
- Be sure to talk about 3-D shapes, also! Cones, spheres, pyramids, and rectangular prisms are important, too!
